Gynecologist Q & A

What is a gynecologist?

A gynecologist is a doctor who specializes in the health of a woman’s reproductive system. This includes the external genitalia, vagina, cervix, uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries, as well as the breasts. The main job of a gynecologist is to monitor the reproductive system for signs of trouble and to diagnose and treat gynecologic conditions.

General gynecology is focused on the reproductive system when a woman is not pregnant. Obstetrics is a separate specialty that concentrates on the health of a woman and her developing baby through the childbearing cycle; many gynecologists specialize in both obstetrics and gynecology.

How often should I see a gynecologist?

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends that teens and women have an annual well-woman exam beginning at the age of 13. A well-woman visit typically includes a physical examination of your vagina, cervix, and breasts, and may include cancer screenings and other tests. A Pap test is recommended every two years for healthy women.

If you’ve had an abnormal Pap test, or you have certain health conditions, you may need to see your gynecologist more frequently for additional monitoring and testing.
